Educational ProgramsRoyalton RootsWe have been working with NOFA-VT FEED program to bring local produce into school cafeterias. In an effort between ourselves and a variety of community members, we started a program called Royalton Roots. Royalton Roots is working to support local foods in the South Royalton School and beyond. The goal is to create a more vibrant local food system by encouraging connections between farms, the school, and consumers. In addition, we invite students and their teachers to come to the farm to get a better understanding of where their food comes from. We really try to go beyond the regular farm tour and cow-petting visit. We like kids (and adults) to dig right in the dirt for potatoes and carrots, or help transplant lettuce, or look for insects in the field. There is so much on the farm to discover.
Since we are a working farm with a "full plate" already, we are limited in the number of students we can have at any one time or how many groups we can have in a season. Still it is an important part of our role in the community. We can also visit our local schools in the winter and do some farm related activities in the classroom.
